How does one become a substance abuse counselor without degrees?
I am a 36 yr old man who spent almost half of my life in prison. As a child I ran the streets and for several years I abused drugs and alcohol. Since then I have gone through recovery and taken several non-degree courses in substance abuse, anger management and cognitive intervention. I would love to pursue a career in substance abuse counseling, helping others who are going through the things I once went through, but unfortunately, I do not have a college education, nor the means to acquire one. I would be grateful for any suggestions anyone may have that would steer me in the right direction.
You may be able to work within a community center. However, otherwise most counselor has at minimum a bachelors level degree and most often these days a Master level degree is required. And most unfortunate is the fact that many states will not license an individual with a felony arrest record. In my opinion, non using addicts (addicts not active in their addiction) make the best counselors. Li-censure is required in most states.
You are a model. Teens are watching you and how you handle crisis situations in your life. drug intervention counselors They look at your problem solving skills and often times use them as their own. So if you solve your problems with alcohol, they may do the same.
