Alcohol Intervention canada
What programs and policies are Canada’s First Nations currently implementing to address fetal alcohol syndrome?
The Royal Commission on Aboriginals several years ago described at length a frightening preponderance of fetal alcohol syndrome affecting most if not all the country’s reserves. Alas, few doctors care to live in the isolation of most of these places and cannot be compelled to do so. Even if they could, there’s little or nothing they can do to treat the condition. In the absence of govt intervention, which is often unwelcome and/or unhelpful, what are communities themselves doing about the problem? Are sufficient funds being set aside, for example, to care for sufferers, who are unlikely ever to be financially independent?
I think some of the bands are looking to care for people born with FAS on there own, I know of some bands have counsellors in place in some Native Friendship Centres to deal with those born FAS.
I know in general society those born with FAS just get pushed aside untreated by the gov. forced to look after themselves and many cannot keep a place of there own because of FAS.
Some can make it ok for awhile then just get a mood change and then just flip out .
I know a native guy in his thirties born FAS worked in pizza place and did construction but did not last because the people he worked for did not understand him.
I had to explain to him pay wages and deductions because he thought $15.00 per hour meant he got $15.00 per hour no one explained deductions to him .
He thought he was getting ripped off by company because his pay did not add up because he was not taught deductions .
Over all he is a good worker if the employer can cope with him and if he can learn to cope with employer he is also a very talented wood carver .
I think the Gov and Churches should look after those aboriginals with FAS because many got that way because there parents drank to erase the thoughts of abuse while being in residential school.
